OccupyWallSt: A Tea Party For Democrats

"The bankers are looting decades-old peoples' programs and the Democrats can't help us. Obama can't help us. Elected officials can't help us."

"It's time for the people to meet and take the bull by the horns!

The quote is from Occupy Wall Streets initial position. Their speaker Sunday, Slavoj Zizek, PhD (See Note below), gave a rousing speech. In it he gives recognition to another, Tea-Party-Movement, OccupyWallSt. This one, the Dems have been slow to claim. The professional protesters were there quickly for the Tea Party. This one began with a group called Adbusters (see Note). They seem to describe themselves as professional protesters. Much like those that sprang up to soakup the Tea Party. They go back a little further. Their goal, protect your brain.

In Zizek's speech, he points to the destruction levied by our financial industry. He points out what the world's citizens are waking up to, the future will be very hard. It does not matter your particular flavor of politics. The economic wreckage's costs are being unfairly born, "You cannot tax job creators!" Here in the States, we had our Right Wing raise a fuss. The Left Wing is taking their grievances to where it all began, for the world, Wall Street.

Regular readers know, it was a bunch of unqualified people in positions they should have never been given, trying to make sense of very difficult financial matters. There were hints, just like the hints that were there before Enron. "Real Estate will always go up," was my favorite.

His is, "We all know the classic scenes from cartoons. The cart reaches a precipice. But it goes on walking. Ignoring the fact that there is nothing beneath. Only when it looks down and notices it, it falls down. This is what we are doing here. We are telling the guys there on Wall Street – Hey, look down!"

His is a positive speech. Pointing out the importance of dreams. He even sees hope for China, because of their dreams. China has been slow in consumerism. That means, their engine of growth is closely tied to the world's economy. Brazil is doing much better in the global world.

He tells a joke, making the connection between Wall Street owning the media. It is a good one,
"Let me tell you a wonderful old joke from communist times.

"A guy was sent from East Germany to work in Siberia. He knew his mail would be read by censors. So he told his friends: Let’s establish a code. If the letter you get from me is written in blue ink ,it is true what I said. If it is written in red ink, it is false. After a month his friends get a first letter. Everything is in blue. The letter reads: everything is wonderful here. Stores are full of good food. Movie theaters show good films from the West. Apartments are large and luxurious. The only thing you cannot buy is red ink."

His four star speech has a wonderful close. It reminds all, time flies by:
"There is a danger. Don’t fall in love with yourselves. We have a nice time here. But remember: carnivals come cheap. What matters is the day after. When we will have to return to normal life. Will there be any changes then."
It appears, it is just another protest movement, like the Tea Party. They may elect a quarter of Congress next year. What he and most miss, Our Declaration of Independence makes us a vary different nation. It is that last line that sometimes is forgotten.

Note:

Slavoj Žižek has been called the ‘Elvis Presley’ of philosophy as well as an 'academic rock star'. He is author of The Indivisible Remainder; The Sublime Object of Ideology; The Metastases of Enjoyment; Looking Awry: Jacques Lacan through Popular Culture; The Plague of Fantasies; and The Ticklish Subject. Slavoj Žižek's work can be characterized as vibrant, full of humor, blatant disregard for distinctions between high and low forms of culture and his work and presence has gathered him critical acclaim as a superstar in the world of contemporary theory (Source: The European Graduate School).

Adbusters:
It appears to be a ripoff of Ghost Busters, much like Ghost Busters appeared to be a ripoff of Bug Busters (Miami).
