Lessons From Mariel You May Not Remember

by J John Swanko

Our President would do well extracting the lessons of the Mariel Boatlift. The cold economics seem to suggest unlimited immigration is a good thing. Extrapulations have shown up in economic impact of climate change and presidential politics.

There are some truths there, not many. When I wrote, Mariel Boatlift Expanded Demand, I was pointing to all the truths that never make it into studies. Those are the lessons I hope Our President understands as he gives his speech to Congress.

Families will make room, so will businesses. That said, there is a real need for outside capital. That would include the federal government. Miami's Cuban community could not have settled itself, much less Mariel refugees without that help or the Catholic and every other Church's help.

Mariel delivered extreme stess. There was no easy way forward. Dade County had to make it work. That took every Dade Countian's energy. Looking at the Irish experience. They were not so lucky. My great uncle establihed a university, after escaping. In those days, where your ship landed in America made a difference. It still took decades, not a few years.

The most important one, Congress must dig in, help. Staff will be extra busy. They have risien to occasion before, I am sure they will again. They do need to be asked.
