3/01/11 (People Port) President's Day weekend saw huge snow fall in Reno, NV and a very packed Florida Welcome Center (2/3 full). A casino's parking lot half full and growing. An out of the way ice cream stand saw more more business in an hour than it did the past week.
Unexpected long lines became the rule. Computer systems novice operators failed as innovating on the fly became the norm. "Just reboot. That's what I did." From one standing in line, behind the counter, or on the phone. The line was moving.
Boats, campers, and the trucks pulling them, had their bugs shaken out. Summer was coming. Many blame the weather. It has been bad for a long time. President's Day looked good. For some, the working tax credit afforded them a long weekend.
Weather did keep plumbers busy across the South, Southwest, however, roadside assistance workers were claiming they were in a lull. Cooks, Service Clerks enjoyed the bump in activity, bragging rights. They did brag while standing in line somewhere else.
Managers meanwhile, were worried about hours, as the lines grew out the door. Recessions are very hard to manage at every level. This recovery will stall, start, with the price of gas -at a minimum. This past weekend, many tourists were still looking for the sun, however, one said, Could not get his money back. Managers at the top will have the toughest time -what worked last week, year, will not work as we climb out of this Great Recession and they do not have the U.M. on their back or maybe they do.
At first glance, innovating on the fly is built into large firms as the downturn took hold however big or small, it is the customer driven firms, managing this economic recovery.
