Yes, We Are Out Of Gold

by J John Swanko

02/08/11 (People Port) Fernley, NV We will not be able to supply our own gold needs. Two big problems, cows, bureaucrats. I found it hard looking for, testing for -gold. Nevada is claimed to be the world's Fourth largest gold producer. Natives still pan for gold after a big rain. Most of the up-to-date maps, do not agree, cannot be read.

The reports claim the U.S. only produced 1.5 million ounces last year. Tiny compared to a -good- gold manufacturing year. Stop in an auto parts store, you find gold used in everything from battery parts (my inverter posts) to audio equipment. I am sure you can add your own, non-military, non-space... uses.

When I started out on this adventure, I spent months researching where the gold was and what hoops I needed to overcome. Used every type of map, from Google Earth to the latest Bureau Of Land Management. I developed an easy test (very limited water wasted), easy locating method (beyond the black dirt). I found I was unable to field test the methods because of simple problems.

Cows are a problem for prospectors. The rented public lands have been leased for generations. A huge portion of public land is used by cows.

Bureaucrats have to like you to help. That is not to say they will try to do their best, sometimes falling short. Some have intentionally gave very bad advice. At one point, I called one asking, Can I dig a hole in a special use area near your sign? No. That special use, off-road vehicles, might hurt me... And there is no gold there. While the BLM staff is forth-right, speaking easily, problems do occur.

One area I wanted to test fell between an Air Force base and gypsum mine, just Northeast of Las Vegas. I wanted to fish the stream. Fish & Wildlife did not know it was there -prospecting was prohibited- their Representative explained, If you can pack away your tools... He sounded in person -like most sound over the phone.

Experts still insist prospecting is allow in almost all gold areas. It is very easy to file a claim. The hard part is finding the gold. They are unable to answer the question, What do I do if I find cows.

Prospecting for gold, working your Claim, built the West. Most mining claim law refers to Nevada case law. From a practical perspective, new innovative prospectors -face huge hurdles our forefathers never imagined. Bureaucrats brag of the extra costs in planning and permitting (not fond of holes in the ground, over fertilization of desert land). Finding gold was the last great equalizer, however, Today's reality eliminates those out of work from trying to live off the their own ingenuity.

The experts around the world are right even if every gold mining operation on the books is approved, We are out of gold.
