02/04/11 (People Port) Deming, NM -Stopped during a Customs check. He thought he smelled that I had been smoking. I Asked for a dog.
My readers include people working for Customs. I drove through those 150 miles of Texas iced roads chasing my story. Truck has gotten beaten up, My door no longer opens at all (I get it fixed after I get my story), no more rear view mirror (glue). I am sure there are may other hurts, that would include me. On my way across Texas I learned, Interstate 20 turns into I 10. I 30... iced in.
Near Texas's border with Mexico, I saw a line of cars, trucks stopped by our Customs people. Have no idea what was going on and guessed it was a response to 9/11. Made it through Texas, in New Mexico east of Mile Marker 103, I saw a blinking yellow arrow, trucks and cars being funnelled into a queue. The people huddling in an office shaped building looked like a Customs person that pulled in behind me as I went to fill up with gas in (Google shows it was called Ft. Hancock Shell in Texas however it has since moved across the street next to Angie's) So i guessed it was a Customs stop.
I am thinking illegal aliens. The light stays red, vehicles are waved through. He did not wave me through. The Customs man tapped on my window, asking me to roll it down. I said it does not roll down. Door does not open, "It would be nice If you could try." He asked if the other does (Managed to get my window down half an inch), and he walked around. It was very cold. He asked why am I handing him my license, Are you a citizen?
I do not now nor have I ever been that type of smoker. I lived through the Dade County Drug wars. This officer and his supervisors are obviously ethically challenged. I know how hard ethics are. That is why I wrote Ethics Can Escape Most. It is sad to learn a huge hurdle to our winning the drug war is ethics.
