Afghanistan Is Looking Up

"As the Taliban are weakened, so too are the chances diminished that al-Qaeda could return to Afghanistan and again plan attacks against the United States and others. Still, there is clearly more work to be done. There is much more to do in promoting stronger governance and economic development.

"The bottom line is that in the last 12 months, we’ve come a long way. Frankly, progress -- the -- even just in the last few months has exceeded my expectations. The Taliban control far less territory than they did when I spoke here one year ago, and as a result, more and more Afghan people are able to live without being terrorized and are instead focusing on achieving a better life for themselves and their families," Quotes from Secretary Robert M. Gates, 12/08/10 Kabul, Afghanistan

Secretary Gates found real improvement. Afghan, coalition forces are limiting Taliban control. Afghans make up sixty percent of the fighting forces. The troops paid a price in the last twelve months as expected. Our heroes are receiving the ribbons, tokens of gratitude for their bravery.

Afghanistan is looking up. Real progress has been made in Helmand, Kandahar. People are getting back their government, commerce is growing.

The British, U.S, and Afghan forces are showing remarkable improvements. As the Taliban expanded their influence, the main reason given by those captured was the Afghan Police. Those same police, now far better trained are attracting young Afghans, to protect their villages.

Senior Taliban leaders were captured or killed in the recent months. Those leaders responsible for organizing the Improvised explosive devices, In charge of kidnapping, Helmand's Taliban, shadow Governor, weapons facilitator delivered from Pakistan all types of kinetic devices to the battlefield.

NATO's efforts are paying off. There are bazaars opening, commercial shops going in at airports. All with ISAF support. Farmers are getting seed, fertilizer, training that will and has allowed Afghanistan to tap into International trade.

The lapis industry is still hodgepodge. As difficult as it is, a real concerted effort needs to take hold bringing those goods, plates, glassware and the like, to the finest jewelers in London, New York... These goods, have been said are the finest in the world. These are far different than those you and I have seen.

The world's efforts in this region are ending terrorists ability to strike.
